My “strengths finder” says I’m a “learner”. I usually don’t put much stock in such surveys, but this one is dead on. At any one time I have 10-12 podcasts going, at least one or two audiobooks, and then plenty of good ‘ole fashioned bound paper books. Don’t get me started on my Twitter rabbit-holes.
Here are five things I discovered or enjoyed this week.
Favorite Podcast Episode
List week I heard an interview with Jamie Seeman, M.D. on the Low Carb MD Podcast, which led me to Seeman’s podcast, “The Fit and Fabulous Podcast”. Episode 10 featured Mary Newport, M.D. who is a pioneer in the use of ketones for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. I’ve seen the horrific effects of Alzheimer’s up close and personal. Hearing Newport’s first-hand testimony of how ketones helped her husband’s dementia makes me wonder why this is not discussed more often in the context of Alzheimer’s treatment.
Audiobook I StartedThis Week
My wife and I have a belief in abundance, rootedness and love of community. We homeschooled our 4 boys (now men). We’ve lived in the same house for 24 years. We grow as much food as we can in our little yard in the suburbs of Memphis. I was delighted this week to find “Redefining Rich”, by Shannon Hayes. I’m a couple of chapters in, but it is a lovely book that describes in words what my wife and I have tried to live out over the past twenty years. Intentional living is a core belief of mine. I’d recommend this book to young families, especially as they set a course for how they want to direct their lives in contrast to what Western American culture dictates.

Book Deal This Week (Hurry!)
Wendell Berry is my favorite writer. The book that directed much of our family’s intentional living, especially in relation to community, food, and ecology was “The Unsettling Of America”, a book of essays by Berry. The Kindle version is on sale for $1.99 right now. I highly recommend it.

Quote of the Week
“A human being’s life has the most meaning when they live it as though they are a hero on a mission.”
– Donald Miller from “Business Made Simple”
Snack I’m Enjoying
You should never go to the grocery store hungry. But I did a couple of weeks ago, and on an impulse I bought a jar of Grillo’s pickles. As soon as I got home I put one (and then two!) in my mouth and they exceeded my expectations. Honestly, I don’t generally eat pickles at all, but these are addictive. They’re also low carb (0g sugar, 1 carb) with clean ingredients (water, Distilled White Vinegar, Salt), Garlic, Dill, Grape Leaves.)
I buy mine at Kroger or Costco.
